Wear the Past, Own the Present: Meeting Cyprus’ Fashion Entrepreneurs

by | Aug 10, 2023

Vintage shops captivate us by taking us on a journey through time, showcasing the fashion, style, and artistry of past eras. Wearing these pieces not only connects us with history but also lets us create a distinct style that’s hard to imitate using contemporary attire. This vintage allure is now spreading to Cyprus, where we spoke with two shop owners. They shared their passion for vintage, its origins, and offered insights into the art of vintage shopping.

In the heart of the online market, lies a quaint treasure trove called Second Tag Cult. Have a look into it, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of nostalgia and charm, where the past merges seamlessly with the present. Meet Anna Christou, the dynamic and passionate young entrepreneur behind this delightful vintage haven.

“I started slowly with an Instagram account, but I also go to flea markets or festivals”

At just 25 years old, Anna exudes an unmistakable love for all things vintage. As we sit down for a conversation amidst an eclectic array of retro furnishings and fashion, her eyes sparkle with excitement, ready to share her journey as a vintage shop owner.

‘I had the idea during quarantine but I got the inspiration and the courage to do it after my visit to Valencia, Spain. I saw a lot of second hand shops there, selling little treasures and I said to myself ‘I want to do the same in Cyprus’. So, I started slowly with an Instagram account but I also go to flea markets or festivals’, Anna tells Headliner Cyprus.

‘The idea of clothes, people and the connection between them fascinates me. Clothes have a story to tell. And if you are curious like me, when you buy something that is second hand, you take a minute to ask yourself, how long ago this item was first purchased, why he/she bought it and what did the person experience with this clothing? Every piece is a piece of art and experience for me. I have picked all the items one by one from a variety of places.’

Anna mentions that what keeps her so motivated about this business is the fact that she is bringing the thrifting ideology into the Cypriot world with other second hand owners promoting what they believe: That every piece of clothes deserves a second chance and the easiest thing to do for the environment is to not run into the fast fashion shops but to support small businesses.

‘We need to spread the word that thrifting is the new era of shopping and explain why fast fashion is not good. We are as unique as our clothes!’

You can shop for Anna’s clothing at Second Tag Cult’s Instagram account or at various events across Cyprus.

Specializing in Discovering Vintage Leather Jackets and Our Own Manufacturing

Meet Irina Apostolidou and Fotis Emmamouel, owners of the Vintage Life Store. ‘The idea for the Vintage Life store has existed in our minds for the last five years. After all, it was a type of business that we saw repeatedly in our travels abroad, Europe and Great Britain. However, such a business needs a clear mind and correct calculation and perception of the environment in which it will operate’.

In our store, you will find clothing “treasures” from world-famous brands, as well as vintage collections from the 80s and 90s and even earlier. The visitor can also find new accessories of our own manufacture. We have been manufacturing leather bags and wallets since 2014 with a separate online store in the worldwide Etsy platform. In our store we also have leather bags from past decades (vintage), selected one by one from European countries. One product that we are proud of and specialized in is vintage leather jackets that we chose very carefully for men’s and women’s.

“Here at Vintage Life, every 15 days when we receive deliveries, we act like little children discovering new treasures!”

We are so optimistic about our movement in this creative path to the wonderful world of fashion, without spending a lot of money and with respect for our planet, that we are already planning our next store’.

What to Look for when you Shop Vintage?

Here are some valuable tips to help you make the most of your vintage shopping experience:

Embrace Uniqueness: The magic of vintage lies in its uniqueness. Seek out items that tell a story and reflect the fashion and style of a bygone era.

Befriend your Clothing Dealer: You’d be amazed at how valuable a personal connection can be. Chances are, if you’re a loyal and patient customer, your dealer will contact you once they locate those distinctive jeans you’ve been seeking. They might even arrange to bring them just for you in Cyprus if they’re importing them from overseas.

Bring a Wingman: A second opinion from a trusted source can expand your fashion horizons.

Explore Accessories: Add a touch of vintage elegance to your modern wardrobe with accessories, including scarves, hats, and jewellery.

Feel the fabric, zippers, buttons and check the tags to examine the quality of the clothing.

Cash is King! Using cash is highly advantageous, especially at thrift stores and flea markets that often prefer cash transactions. Plus, paying with cash often allows for some negotiation when bargaining for better deals.
